New To Therapy

Zemanta Related Posts ThumbnailYou probably have a lot of mixed feelings and misperceptions about therapy.

You think therapy might be for people who can’t handle their own problems, or that it’s only for those who are in serious crisis. You might also think that it’s weird to pay a Psychotherapist to listen to all of your problems.

You’re not alone in thinking any of this. Therapy and marital counseling have a serious stigma, and the whole process is often deeply misunderstood. This isn’t because you should know more about the mysterious field of psychology, it’s because there isn’t a lot of education out there about the process of being in therapy.

Let’s demystify it for you.

Psychotherapy is a form of treatment that focuses on helping people feel better. Just like you would go to the doctor if you had flu like symptoms, therapy treats whatever is bothering you through the very fundamental act of talking.

I know it sounds crazy, but talking about your thoughts and feelings is hugely healing.
Therapy-Readiness
The other important piece about therapy that you need to understand is that the most successful outcomes happen when the relationship between you and your therapist work well.

This is why the hardest part about therapy is finding a therapist that feels like the right fit for you.

If we work together…

Each appointment, which is referred to as a “session”, would take place in my private Downtown Los Angeles office. We would meet one to two times per week depending on your needs. Each session lasts 45 minutes.

You reflect and talk…I respond and advise…you feel wiser and stronger.

It’s not always this straightforward, but this is the general idea.

You do not need to come prepared!

Payment is taken at the end of each session, and a standing weekly appointment is scheduled once we both agree that we want to see each other again.

Relationship-CheckupIf it sounds a lot like dating, it is.

I’ve even written a blog about it.

Starting therapy is definitely a big commitment, but it’s well worth the effort. It takes a great amount of courage and strength to do this work.
